Aeolus

Atmospheric Dynamics Mission

Mission Status: Ended on 28 July 2023
Launch Date: 22 August 2018
Instrument Type: Lidars

Aeolus was the first satellite to measure wind profiles from space. It played a pivotal role in enhancing global weather forecasting, climate modelling, and in our understanding of atmospheric dynamics. By providing crucial data on wind patterns, Aeolus contributed to improved accuracy in weather predictions and a deeper comprehension of Earth's atmospheric processes.

Scientific Instruments

The Atmospheric Laser Doppler Instrument (ALADIN) was designed to provide wind profiles of the atmosphere from space. Using direct detection Doppler lidar technology, ALADIN measured the speed and direction of wind at various altitudes. These data are invaluable for studying atmospheric dynamics, improving weather models, and refining our understanding of global climate patterns.
